BD is a medical instrumentation device manufacturer that specializes in medical diagnostic tools, etc. This was my first time working in a manufacturing environment and was a great experience in many ways. During my two Co-Op periods with this company, I was assigned various tasks:
· There was a need to replace an outdated pressure sensing test tool to validate a certain part of an instrument. I was assigned the task and given specifications to which to conform. I opted to implement a microcontroller/sensor circuit. From the ground up, I designed a new Printed Circuit Board in Altium, sent it to be manufactured, and then assembled it. I then designed and fabricated the test bed fixture, wrote the software to control the microcontroller, wrote the validation and verification protocol, performed said protocol, wrote a user manual, packaged and shipped the test fixture to another facility of the company.
· For my second time around, I was again trusted with the design of a test tool, this time for screening certain light sensors that had high fallout. Having already had some experience, I was able to design a more complex design in less time, with mechanical moving parts, and focusing on ease of use for the operator. I gained more knowledge on CNC machining documentation, and was able to work threaded holes into my design, which made assembly of the fixture simpler.
